My Thoughts
Supastition turned many heads with this 2005 release. Chain Letters is a great introduction to the lyrical thought stream of Supastition. Adressing many different life problems and situations that happen to him. Also showing praise to the musical expression that shine light in his day. As you'll hear frequent in Chain Letters, Supastition addresses the critques who continue to hold him to his Deadline (EP) period. Asking for another Deadline cause it was this and that. Well I attempt grown & see the musical growth of Supa from Deadline to Chain Letters. This album is one of favorite from 2005. I strongly recommend everyone to check it out.

Verse Of The Day

Song:Brooklyn Masala
Artist:Masta Ace
Album:Long Hot Summer

[Verse 1]
I met her on the corner of Gates n Bedstuy
It was only right that I approached and said "hi"
cuz she looked like no other chick I ever saw
she was on her way coming about the cornerstore
I axed "could I carry your bags?" and walk her home
I can tell she was new in New York, just from her tone
cuz she wasn't that typical, rude and ignorant, teeth-sucking and
eye-rolling tellin me to leave her alone (leave me alone)
We dipped and we yapped, we chit and we chat
about this and that and where she lived at, yeah
This may sound kinna Wu Tang Clan-ish
but this butter-pecan honey was not Spanish
She lived like 3 blocks from my man
in New York for 6 months, moved from Pakistan
Well that explains the strange accent and the strange clothes
and that cute little diamond in your nose
She said "I gotta wear this gear every Sonday, but..
you gotta see how I look on Monday" Word?!?
Mean that I can see you again? Maybe..
give you a call... take you out on aweekend?
She winked at me and kinda laughed
ripped a piece of the grocery bag and wrote her math
You can bet your last damn dollar
that I'mma give you a call... Brooklyn Masala

Jay-Z Performing At Glastonbury

AFP

June 29, 2008 12:00am

US RAPPER Jay-Z answered his critics, with a performance at Britain's famous Glastonbury music festival that was received with rapturous cheers

Oasis's Noel Gallagher was one of the most vocal critics against Jay-Z performing at England's most famous rock festival.

Striding on stage tonight with a guitar slung over his shoulder, Jay-Z cheekily led the crowd in a rendition of Oasis's "Wonderwall", smiling throughout, and with wife Beyonce Knowles in attendance, his set included songs such as "99 Problems".

In a radical departure from the indie rock and guitar bands commonly associated with Glastonbury, the festival recruited the New Yorker in a bid to reach out to a younger audience.

Michael Eavis, who runs the festival on his dairy farm, admitted they had "stuck their necks out on this one."

Organisers staunchly defended the choice of Jay-Z, despite the slow ticket sales and sniping from Glastonbury veterans like Oasis guitarist Noel Gallager.

In April, Gallagher slammed the booking of Jay-Z to headline to festival as "wrong", declaring: "I'm not having hip-hop at Glastonbury. It's wrong."

The festival, held on Worthy Farm near Glastonbury in Somerset, south-west England, is the largest greenfield music and performing arts festival in the world.

The event, which turns more than 320 hectares of rolling countryside into a tent city, started with 1,500 people in 1970 and has its roots in hippiedom.

This a very big deal considering how hip-hop is conceived to other music fans. Well though they blamed Jay for low tickets sales. Jay came out and rocked the crowd. This should be a turning point in hip hop music.

Verse Of The Day: Stop Fooling Yourself

Artist: Skyzoo
Album: Cloud 9: The 3 Day High
Song: Stop Fooling Yourself

Uh, to whoever it may concern
If you listenin', I'm lookin' for a place to turn
See it seems like, this is all I want out of life
But it's the other way around, I wanna do right
But it's moreso a question of responsibilities
So the lights stay on, but my conscience is killin' me
Gettin' my Mariano on, pitcher perfect
Still inside, I fear the Lord like "is it worth it?"
Huh, at first I say "no"
But when I open my closet, it makes say so - fuck it
And this is hustler haven, see I'm not alone
Cause he would say that I got faith, or I got a home
So I ask God if he still love us
I don't always wanna be this drug dealin' ma'fucker but
I was playin' on, with opposite plans
And I ain't even have the decency to wash my hands

Hip-Hop's Influence On My People.

The influence of The Hip-Hop Culture on my Samoan people is an interesting matter simple because of it's subtle yet obvious presence in the youth. From the manner of dress to the very ideal of materialism that holds back and defines mainstream Hip-Hop today. While my people still hold on to the true essence of the Fa'a Samoa, They have been small but noticeable changes that started in the mid 90's and have evolved to where it's at today.

Many young Samoans most likely do not even know the impact of the music they hear or video's they watch do to they mind-state because it's a very subtle change. Dress like this or your not cool. Talking like this would make you sound more hip to whats going on.
While thinking more on this, I've come to the conclusion that even though theres is most definitely a major influence on the youth from the Hip-Hip community, It is entirely from a glorified view-point. Nothing they(The Youth) see is a proper representation of Hip-Hop, But rather their interpretation of what mainstream feeds them.

While the Samoan youth still hold the values of the Fa'a Samoa, Hip-Hop has left it's mark. Whether that is a good thing or a bad is subject to debate, But hey whats wrong with a little flavor into the mix?....

Verse Of The Day:

Artist: Rich Boy
Album: Rich Boy
Song: Let's Get This Paper

[Verse 1]

R.I.P. Pooh Bear, that's my dead homie

Fuck that other shit, hey, let's get this bread homie
Remember when they could catch a charge down in Atlanta
They underestimate me 'cause I'm comin' from Alabama
Martin Lee, innocent, he ain't even have a chance
They beat him in that boot camp 'til he died in that ambulance
That boy was only fifteen years old, fuck what they say he did
So tell me how I'm 'posed to feel when police killin' kids?
And then we can't get a job, ridin' we get them pounds
If it ain't that coke then we get that 'dro and break it down
See that ice, the dope man paradise
Boy better think twice, that dope have you doin' life
They tore down the projects, so where we gon' move next?
They takin' them food stamps, they stop government checks
Hey, money my motivator, my mouth my money maker
Naw I don't see them haters, so let's go get this paper

Danny! - And I Love HER (Review)

So after months of waiting & anticipating "And I Love HER" is finally here. Danny! does it again with this Original Motion Picture Soundtrack. The album basically plays like a movie as each song flows to a intertude to another song corresponding with the situation.

Opening with the voice of a lovely women then the abstract flow of Danny! over his own 9th like sampled beat. Describing his feelings about the game & basically venting his emotions. Next track is Guess Who's Back the single of the album featuring Naledge. Production is smooth & soulful as Danny! & Naledge flow over it. Naledge as always rips on this track most notably "Witness the birth of a legend, JellyBean Bryant". Such great chemistry makes me wonder if more Naledge & Danny is in the near future. I Want HER featuring the beautiful sounds of Brittany Bisco who I'm clueless of. Danny! is explaing himself and love to his woman.

Well I don't want to give away the whole story of the album but its a truly well executed album & concept. The music does outweigh the concept but the first listen revealing the concept is a great experience (another reason why I want spoil it). But the highlights songs are At What Price where Danny! switches up his flow explaining his experience with a ex. Misery with Collette is about overcoming your troubles & not falling victim to Misery. Where You Goin again with Maria on the hook & ablibs. Danny! is pleading to his woman pouring out his heart. Then with the wack Von Pea on I Don't Know describing just how faithful Danny! is & making excuses of his suspicious activity. Then to reminsce MF Doom type ish with Yoko Ono featuring Che Grand. From "Do You" on the concept & story is gone with Danny! speaking on hypocritical people particular parents telling their children to not do something that the parents themselves are doing. The last two feature very well excuted & flipped familiar samples.

Though I didn't mention a few songs they are still better then alot of material I heard this year. This album is so great I expected so much and was given more. Special thanks to Danny! for the album. Support him by purchasing the album. I will .....so till next post

Verse Of The Day: The River

artist: Noel Gourdin
song: The River
album: After Of My Time

Growin' up, it was tough
We were glad for what little we had
I saw my sheriff, old family, Mississippi
Dirt roads and Confederate flags
Everyday my father would tell me
"Son, run and don't never come back"
That's where I left my girl
That's where my heart is at, and ohh...

[Chorus:]
I held my breath when they dipped my head
Then I came up shiny and new
Found out about love in the back of my Impala
Where they laid my grandfather too
Down by the river
Where black folks gather
After Sunday service is through
How the river runs to the ocean
I'll be runnin' right back to you

I got along, I'm movin' on
I bandaged the scars of, well
I think of her, then I seem to wait
For a card or a letter in the mail
I walk the beach with the sand in my feet
Place my ear to a shell
I wonder if you miss me too
Cause I been longin' to get to you
I'm sick of starin' out my window sill
I'm tired of hopin' she remembers me still
I'm packin' my bags, I said I'm goin' back home
To the place where I belong
The river
And if she's there when I get there
I'm never gonna leave her again
You see, she stole my heart
Down by the river

[Chorus]

So I'm packin' up my suitcase
Bought me a one-way fare
I'm leavin' everything behind me
But in my heart I always care
And I'll still be right there
Thank you baby
Cause nothin' can replace that part in my life, and...

[Chorus]

Danny! says "Well, technically still not in stores. Due to delays unforeseen by me, And I Love H.E.R. still won't be available in major retailers for a few more weeks due to distribution policies and wary one-stops not willing to stock an album that blatantly apes The Beatles.

Verse Of The Day: RE:DEFinition

Artist: Black Star
Album: Mos Def and Talib Kweli are Black Star
Song: RE:DEFinition

[Talib Kweli]

RE:DEFinition, turning your play into a tragedy
Exhibit level degree on the mic, passionately
Niggaz is sweet so I bet if I bit I'd get a cavity
Livin to get high, you ain't flyer than gravity
We Die Hard like the battery done in the back of me by the mad MC
who think imitation is the highest form of flattery, actually
Don't be mad at me, I had to be the one to break it to you
You get kicked into obscurity like judo, no Menudo
cause you pseudo, tryin to compete with reality like Xerox
Towards destruction you spiraling like hairlocks, wipe them teardrops
Chasing stars in your eyes, playing games with your lives
Now the wives is widows soakin up pillows, weepin like willows
Still mo' blacks is dyin, kids ain't livin they tryin
"How to Make a Slave" by Willie Lynch is still applyin
Regardless, the Mos is one of my closest partners
Rockin ever since before Prince was called The Artist
Rocker before Funkmaster Flex was rockin Starter
When 'Pac and Biggie was still cool before they was martyrs
Life or death, if I'm choosin with every breath I'm enhancin
Stop, there comes a time when you can't run

Fakts One Return With Solo Production Album

Fakts One - Long Range

Although most of the details are sketchy, the one thing that’s certain is that the once highly influential underground hip-hop DJ/Producer and Perceptionist member, Fakts One, one day, simply disappeared. Some blame problems with his record label that folded right before the scheduled release of his debut solo album. Others say the stresses of the unstable music industry led Fakts to turn his back on hip-hop as a profession. Whatever the reason, he decided to make a clean break from the music and many of his closest friends in the industry haven’t heard from him since.

DJ Fakts One was a key figure in the Boston Hip-Hop scene for many years. He got his start djing parties and breaking local acts on WERS radio in the late '90's, through the popular "89.9 at Night" show. He dropped one of his first mix tapes (yes, on cassette) on the famed Brick Records titled "Heavy Hitters" and instantly started making noise throughout the state. Lending production to many releases by Mr. Lif and Akrobatik, it was inevitable that these three long-time friends would form a trio that was 100% pure hip-hop called The Perceptionists.

Their album "Black Dialogue" was released in 2005 on Definitive Jux to critical claim. With great sales, and a tour that was ready to kick off, this powerhouse of a rap group was about to start taking things over! At the same time Fakts was waiting on his solo record debut to be released, but the label continued to stall, delay and eventually folded into the industry abyss. Then, in a sudden turn of events, Fakts up and left his partners “Lif and Ak” stranded with no DJ at the start of their tour and vanished off the hip-hop map altogether.

Although Fakts One’s departure left fans and friends both frustrated and confused, no one could deny his musical talents. Most just assumed that his highly anticipated debut opus “Long Range” would just become another victim of industry politics. It would be yet another rumored release that nobody would ever hear or could prove actually existed…until now. Finally, five years after its completion, “Long Range” will be released EXACTLY how he had intended before quitting the business. The album has some of the best MC's around (Little Brother, Planet Asia, Boot Camp Clik as well as his brothers in The Perceptionists; Mr. Lif and Akrobatik) and as one would expect, the beats are that classic boombap sound, drenched with his own blood, sweat and tears.

It's a shame it took so long for this to happen but as they say good things come to those who wait. Hopefully when Fakts hears all his years of hard work finally coming to light, he can sit back (wherever he is), smile and realize it was well worth the journey.

Kay of The Foundation

A Emcee from Houston who has worked with Ali Shaheed Muhammad, Tanya Morgan, Strange Fruit Project & most notably Nicolay. Yes, this is Kay from Time:Line. Well Kay isn't a rookie he actually released his first solo album in 2005. Kay has been critized for his lyricism on Time:Line, well I satisfied as Kay wanted a more straight forward appoach as the concept of the album it self was mind boggling (in a good way) enough. Kay is also apart of The Foundation which is live hip-hop band also signed to the Rawkus 50 imprint.

Together they are the Together Brothers. They release their debut album under the name last year through the Rawkus 50 imprint.

Verse Of The Day

Artist:Edo G Featuring Pete Rock & Masta Ace
Song:Wishing

[2nd Verse (Edo G)]

I wish my pops didn't die when I was seven years old
If there's life after death, is Heaven this cold?
I wish I could wipe the tears of all the cryin' mothers
Wish New York niggas didn't start flyin' colors
I wish my people stop avoidin' the truth
BET stop poisonin' youth
We need changes for teenagers as they go through phases
More than just a concrete jungle, the world got green acres
I wish I'd been more diligent
Smart cats rhyme militant
The fresh rhyme ignorant
I wish the world didn't give us funny looks
Think we all just dummies and crooks
Athletes and entertainers singin' hooks
We need more black babies that's in the books (read on)
I wish God could take away the pain
I know you wanna call me insane
I'm a dreamer

Ras Kass Preps Institutionalized Vol. 2 For August 5th

Ras Kass Set To Release Institutionalized Vol. 2 On August 5th On Babygrande Records

One of the most critically acclaimed West Coast emcees of all time, Ras Kass is renowned for his complex lyricism, sharp battle rhymes and witty punchlines.

1996's debut "Soul On Ice" established Ras as one of the front-runners of the post West Coast gangsta rap movement pioneered by seminal acts such as N.W.A. and nationally popularized by modern day icons Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg & more.

Marrying a hardcore street sensibility with his signature witty wordplay, Ras built a loyal underground core with subsequent albums including 1998's "Rasassination," featuring guest appearances by Dr. Dre, Xzibit, Twista & RZA (of Wu-Tang) as well as multiple mixtape releases.

Currently serving time, Ras Kass' ambition in the face of adversity is on full display with the August 5th bow of "Institutionalized Vol. II."

Sure to satisfy Ras' loyal constituency and beyond, "Institutionalized Vol. 2" is a testament to both Ras' resilience and the raw skill that underlies his longevity within the ever-changing hip-hop landscape.

Sleepers Are Fighting For The ER Like Dumb & Dumb

Been a crappy week so far. Postal service it tripping badly. A few bills are over due & ish of that sort. Then earlier today (Tuesday) my parked car is ran into. Well with all that happening still doesnt stop me from expressing my feeling & ideas.

Anyway I was listening to J-Live -Then What Happened? realized how much I play the album. Most played album this year with Time:Line, Summer Session EP & The Bridge EP. But J's album has a certain flare to it that satisfies your music taste buds. I heard alot of people down the last track "You Out There" produced by Nicolay. Well the I believe the track is excellent on both parts. Nicolay gave a great beat to close a album. J delivered his heart & soul on the track. I love this album so much. I suggest everybody to pick it up.

I know Justus Of All was just a official release of a mixtape into an album. But why do none of the added track that I've heard (I havent heard the one with O-Dash featuring which is only on iTunes) dont feature both Little Brother members? Truthfully the track with Ninth was a disappointment though Pooh murdered it. Hearing Te besides his partner & former member would have been nice....Oh well LB is still dope. Hopefully I'll see the concert with them, Strange Fruit Project & Big Daddy Kane.

Next month looks promising. Alot of albums dropping on each tuesday.

Verse Of The Day: Life Ain't Sweet

Artist: Astonish f/ Termanology
Album: From Now Until Forever

Song: Life Ain't Sweet

[Astonish]
Ain't got the life a nigga dream about
I'm living what these other rappers sing about, trying to find a decent route
If niggas with skills was getting the deals
Then I'll be pushing a Beamer out and not a DeVille
Struggling to help my Ma with the bills that's pilling up
High as fuck, I'm trying to find the answer in a dutch
Got an arsenal that turn the hardest nigga to a marshmallow
Walking a thin line, my life is like a carnival
Ring the alarm and bring me a bomb
So I could blow up but I ain't never read the Qur'an
So I ain't taking about a terrorist sect
Me and Term, that's my word, couldn't find a better pair in the batch
Hate it or love it, but you could never say that we fronted
But we been fronted on cuz niggas be hating for nothing
But I'm a ride until the die that I expire
And to all of y'all I give my all like Mariah

Song: Rise and Fall

[AZ]
Grindin, timin, motherfucker
Rep up, stepped up motherfucker
So quiet, coulda crept on the sucker
From behind and blew the breath out the buster
But instead held my head like a hustler
Parked up to get the sound of the muffler
Heard a clown buyed his pounds, bein fluffier
Tellin niggas outa town they be luckier
It get sad when the hood had enough of ya
Broke niggas buck at ya, poke you in ya jugular
But when you high you feel niggas can't fuck witcha
I'm surprised the nigga still had customers
Shut my eyes and inhaled my smoke
Tryna decide should I let him slide, but nope
He broke ties when he spoke his lies
Tellin spies that he hope I die so my reply is
To keep it real, I hope he can fly
Cause I'ma send him to them open skies

Update: Press Release For S1's Music Box

News from my howntown..Dallas Texas delivering some great music. Strange Fruit Project's producer S1.

STRANGE FRUIT PROJECT’S ‘SYMBOLYC ONE’ RELEASES
NEW 12” SINGLE “MASH”

New Album in Stores July 22nd

(Dallas, Texas – May 22, 2008) – Texas’s soulful hip hop producer/performer Symbolyc One, aka S1, releases the first 12” single, Mash from his upcoming solo album Strange Fruit Project Presents: S1 Music Box, on Spilt Milk Da Label/Traffic Entertainment.

The single Mash, which releases on May 27th is a brilliant hard-hitting, beat-knocking record laced with S1’s signature production sounds and funky overtones. S1 continues his ongoing collaboration with rapper Big Pooh and the Little Brother Crew (The Minstrel Show, The Art of OneMind, and The Healing) by enlisting them as guest emcees on the project. However, this time he adds Houston prodigy Kay of The Foundation to the mix. This latest union advances their like-minded mission of diversifying the face of Southern rap while sharpening hip-hop's dull creative edges.

The B-side track entitled Be Sure, features Brooklyn’s “Street Messiah” DV Alias Khryst, who delivers the smooth harmonic MC vocal stylings for which S1 songs have become popular. These same haunting vocals were captured on De La Soul’s 2000 release Art Official Intelligence: Mosaic Thump album, which earned the group a Grammy® nomination.

The single Mash is the perfect introduction to S1’s 2nd solo album Strange Fruit Project Presents: S1 Music Box, due in stores on July 22. Named after S1’s reputation for churning out classic hits, Music Box features an array of hip hop veterans including songstress Tone Trezure featured on Snoop Dog’s Rhythm & Gangsta LP, Rah Digga of Flip Mode Squad, and Speech from Arrested Development. West Coast newcomer Young Blu joins Strange Fruit Project’s extended family members Bavu Blakes and Darien Brockington to round out this eclectic release.

S1, a Waco, Texas native, emerged as a solo artist with the release of Art of OneMind (BBE Records, 2005). He is best known for being one third of the hip hop group Strange Fruit Project. Their album The Healing was awarded among iTunes Top 25 Hip Hop Albums of 2006. In August 2005, S1 co-produced the Ghostface Killah song Milk’em which debuted number 2 on College Music Journal (CMJ) charts. He has collaborated with such artists as Slim Thug and Chamillionaire. Currently he is a core member of Erykah Badu’s electronic production group, the Cannabinoids.

S1’s tracks have been licensed for such hit TV shows as CSI, MTV’s Run’s House, and the top selling video game 2KSports NCAA College Hoops 2K8. Visit www.myspace.com/symbolycone.
