Q-Tip - The Renaissance

When seeing this album, I didn't think much of it. Honestly I didn't listen to a single song till I heard the entire album. Well good I didn't sleep cause this album is banging. Tip's lyricism hasn't diminished any in my opinion. I'm a big Tribe fan mainly cause of tip. So I was quite hesitate to hear this album cause it might put some tarnish on Tip's career. Well I guess Kamaal had his polishing wipe out on this album. Honestly I don't know if he wrote these verses years ago or early this year. I know some might disagree or criticize but there isn't a major misstep this entire album. Beginning with Johnny Is Dead, some ill keys and matching kicks. Tip rides the beat phenomenally like only he can. Then followed by sample heavy Won't Trade. The true highlight of this album in my opinion is We Fight (Love) as Raphael shows his amazing vocals while Tip describes love as many of us might know. From that point on, the album takes a step further into it's excellence. Dance On Glass has Tip gracefully showcasing his brilliant lyricism. Next Norah Jones blesses us with her powerful vocal prowess. The D'Angelo asissted joint reminds me of the old Native Tongue days. This album feels complete and not rushed. Thats what seperates this album from many others this year. Definitely part of the top 15. But will it stand the test of time is the real question above this album. Not too sure if it will but I'll continue to play the hell out of it till.

8 Days since I last posted something...lol. Not alot has happened though. But I would like to take this chance and tell you that The Knux will probably be the next big thing in music. The Hollywood By Way Of New Orleans group is signed on Interscope and their new album is the shit. I've been bumping it all last week. But I'm definitely ordering it and it releases Oct 28. To be honest alot of comparsions could be made about this group but none should be applied because it would only limit their potential in people's mind since they'll hold them to the golden standard set by their predecessors. Anyway I feeling this album and highly recommend it. Also recommend checking out 14kt's new album which is bananas. I ordered it off iTunes so unfortunately no stream but preview it and you'll see. "Without Dilla (Donut 4 Dilla)" is whoa....on some classic Dilla ish.

So I was just searching iTunes and I find out the beautiful songstress released an project call The Prelude EP. So I couldn't resist so I bought it. If you heard The Minstrel Show you've heard the wonderful sounds of her voice. But you've probably remember the name from her collaboration on the Foreign Exchange's Connected album. Well she back in full effect prepping for her next album, The Ballad of Purple St. James. Yahzarah gives us a little piece of magic to hold us off till then. The Prelude EP is a excellent introduction to her music for new fans but its a wonderful showing and her most hardcore fan will be greatly satisfied. Yahzarah deliver a duet with Raheem Devaughn and frequent collaborator Phonte. This EP honestly is nothing short of amazing and I highly recommended you check it out as you won't regret throwing a 8 bucks for it....

So I was headed out to the imfamous PV versus Grambling game out here in Dallas. So since I know certainly type of music can get my woman and her two friends to hush. I put in Heltah Skeltah in for my one homie (2 dudes and 3 girls in my Honda Civic that been on beast mode since my last tune up, lol). Anyway this was my third time hearing the whole LP through and its just now settling. Well since they annouced this album back when Jesus Price Superstar came out. I had this pre-conceived idea on how this album would be, RAW HARDCORE LYRICALLY FUNNY ISH...

(lol, watch Buckshot get DOWN!!...oh and Im also happy to hear that Buck is out the hospital...a week late but im still happy.)

Well I was right...I put this on the best of the year list on the left but as far as group releases go, shis is one of the best. Sean Price killed that shit with ease as Rock bounced back from a meh "album/mixtape or whatever you want to call" attempt. Rock is probably on the more underrated of the group but he is as good or better then Sean...I wish they put some Black Milk in the boards and a guest verse from Guilty...but no matter this is great LP for anyone who just wanna wyle out to some hard drums and hard flows....

So ever since I listened to Madlib's new album. I've been bumping that, Ode to The Ghetto, The Shining, Jay Loves Japan, Champion Sound, Liberation, Madvillany and other ish from Stones Throw fam. But finally I think I've reach the full appreciation of their music. The more I examine I see that they have abstract but unique flows over some absolute amazing production. Raw Shit by Jaylib featuring Talib Kweli is some epic shit. Honestly I'm shocked that I don't hear that much about Champion Sound. The Shining has always been a long time favorite. Individual tracks are those tracks from Donuts that MF Doom, Guilty, Ghost, Tip & Kweli jumped on. Sniper Elite/Murder Goons is a great mix. Maybe all this is in preparation to the new MF Doom album supposely coming out later this month. Hopefully but not looking too good but anyway I hope we get some more Stones Throw before the year closes out. Supposedly Guilty Simpson & Madlib got a EP coming out called O.J. Simpson EP....lol (OJ = Otis Jackson = Madlib). So I'll go back to listening to my Stones collection and enjoy...

Now On - Tommorrow Already

Many of you have seen me sing the praise of Now On. But with their newest album I think they have surpassed my expections. Tommorrow Already is a collection soulful and lyrical music. Not just talking about bling or how they hate those with bling. Now On makes creativity music like the kind their parents listened to. See many don't recoginize that the bitching about how dead hip hop is just isnt cool. Make some good hip hop music and prove it is. Well Now On doesn't even touch the subject but they prove that it isn't dead. Well as always when Haircut blesses us with his creativity sounds we must point out just how talent he is. Well through out this record Haircut stays consistent with the majority of songs he produced. Also featured on this album is Jake One & Atsronote. Arguably one of the best producers out period....Now On lyrically keep it on point. I was totally satisfied after listening to this album but pen point to certain tracks it hard so I just leave up to you....cop Tommorrow Already nuff said...

DJ KO - Picture This...

Now I was impressed by the line-up on S1's album or Jake One but the lineup on DJ KO's album has to be the sickest. Would you ever think you'd see Torae & O.C. on one track over some Ayatollah production? The album opens up with one of my favorite rappers Silent Knight and underrated East spitting some dope shit over 9th Wonder's thumping drums. The album has the best of the best MCs over the best of the best producers. But the are standouts are Silent Knight who destroyed ever track he was on while Emilio Rojas (Raks-One) freely unleashes vicious multis and metaphors. Then after the killer Elzhi/Royce/Supastition track you hear one of the dopest samples then some "loud drums and crazy loops" courtesy of Illmind. Analogic is perhaps the most impressive artist to touch this album. Seriously don't sleep on Analogic..But special thanks to DJ KO for putting together such a great album.

Its Madlib. He's great. This album is great. Following suit of Jackson Conti's Sujinho, Beat Konducta Volume 5 and Madvillany 2 remixes. The production on this album is epic. I was reading on Stone Throws board and people were down this album. Some people are just too nic picky and only song with subpar production was Murs joint..which sorry Lib, sounds like some simple FL Studio drum pattern but besides that. This album is crazy. Guilty Simpson killed his two joints. Go! is heavy well Blow The Horn On Em is Guilty beasting...I like the interludes and the instrumentals sprinkled over the album. Madlib even pulls out the rhyme book on a few joints. So stop all the downing of Madlib just cop the album...

That now that guy has some serious talent. Produced entirely by Black Milk and featuring only three guest verses on the entire album (from Pharoahe Monch, Royce Da 5'9", and Sean Price), TRONIC shows Black Milk flexing his solo production and emcee skills through tracks that are more expressive and daring than his previous works. The album is a departure from the soul-sample driven sounds of 2007's Popular Demand, as Black employs more live instrumentation, embraces the use of both vintage and modern synthesizers, and explores more orchestral song structure. Another one of my personal favorites from last year. Hezekiah is a great MC and an overall soulful dude. This album opens with some funky drums, the smooth singing of Muhsinah & Heze rippin down the booth. Essentially setting the whole tone of album. But the track after, "Wild & Wreackless" backs up that message with a little more thump in the lyrics of Heze. The rest of the album follows a funky soul vibe as the influences of Dilla is evident. Heze also says he wrote "Wild & Wreakless" the day Dilla passed. Possibly a good friend with the late legend. Neverthe less Heze rhymes like it's his last day on earth and the overall quality of the music it awesome. The guest appearances basically criminally slept-on singers, musicans, MCs & Bilal. Honestly if you haven't heard this album I suggest you cop it off Amazon. Hope Heze got some project coming soon...Oh by the way the awesome production is from Hezekiah himself.

Four years after the release of their critically acclaimed debut "Connected," The Foreign Exchange returns with their sophomore set, "Leave It All Behind."

Consisting of singer/songwriter Phonte and producer Nicolay, The Foreign Exchange came together via the online hip-hop community Okayplayer.com in 2002. After trading files through Instant Messenger for over a year, Nicolay (living in his native Holland at the time) and Phonte (a Raleigh, NC resident) completed their debut album before they ever met each other in person. The album, "Connected," was released in 2004 to positive reviews, and was praised by legendary DJ's such as Jazzy Jeff, King Britt, and DJ Spinna for its inventive mix of hip-hop, R&B, and electronica.

"Leave It All Behind" finds The Foreign Exchange much closer in geography (Nicolay has since become a resident of Wilmington, NC), but located much further from their hip-hop origins. The duo's second full-length is a dark, multilayered affair that features Phonte showcasing his abilities as an exceptional lead and harmony vocalist, while Nicolay extends his musical palette to include sprinklings of jazz, downtempo, and house. The lush, Darien Brockington-assisted "Take Off the Blues" picks up where Connected's sleeper hit "Come Around" left off, while the complex polyrhythms and dreamy synthesizers of "Sweeter Than You" are described by Phonte as "swing jazz for the next century." Marc Mac (of legendary UK production team 4hero), also contributes a string arrangement to the duo's glorious cover of Stevie Wonder's oft-forgotten 1991 gem, "If She Breaks Your Heart."

In addition to appearances from longtime FE affiliates Darien Brockington and Yahzarah, the album also features guest shots from producer/keyboardist Zo! and vocalist Muhsinah.

CHICAGO, Illinois (CNN) -- Thousands of supporters were expected at a Saturday rally in Springfield, Illinois, to see the debut of Sen. Barack Obama and Delaware Sen. Joe Biden as a presidential ticket.

Obama, the presumptive Democratic nominee for president, announced his selection of Biden as his running mate with a 3 a.m. text message and a statement on his official Web site.

"Barack has chosen Senator Joe Biden to be our VP nominee," the text message said.

"Joe and I will appear for the first time as running mates this afternoon in Springfield, Illinois -- the same place this campaign began more than 19 months ago," Obama said in an e-mail sent to supporters Saturday morning.

"I'm excited about hitting the campaign trail with Joe, but the two of us can't do this alone," he wrote. "We need your help to keep building this movement for change."

Before the text messages were distributed, multiple Democratic sources confirmed to CNN early Saturday that Obama wanted the Delaware senator as his vice president.

"Sen. Obama has continued in the best traditions for the vice presidency by selecting an exceptionally strong, experienced leader and devoted public servant," Clinton said in a written statement Saturday morning.

"Sen. Biden will be a purposeful and dynamic vice president who will help Sen. Obama both win the presidency and govern this great country."

Biden's stock rose earlier this week after he returned from a two-day trip to the Republic of Georgia after Russian troops invaded.

Biden, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, brings decades of experience that could help counter GOP attacks on Obama's lack of experience in foreign policy.

Sen. John McCain's campaign quickly reacted to word that Biden would be Obama's running mate, calling attention to Biden's past comments about Obama's experience.

"There has been no harsher critic of Barack Obama's lack of experience than Joe Biden," McCain campaign spokesman Ben Porritt said in a written statement.

"Biden has denounced Barack Obama's poor foreign policy judgment and has strongly argued in his own words what Americans are quickly realizing -- that Barack Obama is not ready to be president.

In a debate during the Democratic primary contest, Biden raised questions about other candidates' foreign policy experience.

"Who among us is going to be able on Day One to step in and end the war? Who among us understands what to do about Pakistan? Who among us is going to pick up the phone and immediately interface with Putin and tell him to lay off Georgia because Saakashvili is in real trouble. Who among us knows what they're doing? I have 35 years of experience," Biden said.

During another debate, moderator George Stephanopoulos referred to some of Biden's comments on Obama.

"You were asked, 'Is he ready?' You said, 'I think he can be ready, but right now, I don't believe he is. The presidency is not something that lends itself to on-the-job training,'" Stephanopoulos said.

"I think I stand by that statement," Biden replied.

Biden, in a July interview, said he would choose Obama's judgment over John McCain's war record and foreign policy experience.

"But 20 years of experience that has not been very solid in terms of projecting what was going to happen just doesn't make you a better commander-in-chief," Biden said. "We don't need as a commander-in-chief a war hero. John's a war hero. We need someone with some wisdom."

Biden abandoned his own White House run after a poor showing in Iowa's first-in-the-nation caucuses. He also ran for the 1988 Democratic presidential nomination but dropped out after charges of plagiarism in a stump speech. Learn more about Biden

The 65-year-old was first elected to the Senate in 1972. Shortly afterward, his first wife and daughter were killed in a car accident. He considered resigning, but decided to continue with his political career.

Biden is serving out his sixth term, making him Delaware's longest-serving senator.

He is married and has three children. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Delaware and got a law degree from Syracuse.

In 1988, Biden suffered an aneurysm and nearly died but has recovered fully.

One of Biden's grandfathers was a Pennsylvania state senator, according to the Almanac of American Politics.

Biden will make his first big speech as the vice-presidential candidate on Wednesday, August 27 -- the third night of the Democratic convention.

Usually I don't do Spotlight albums on a album so recent but I thought since I'm really feeling this album and I haven't shared my final thoughts about it on the site. So I made a exception to that. As a fellow native of the great state of Texas I respect S1 for not fitting into the typical Texas sound. He invents his own sound and presence with this album. This album really makes me wonder when will we see another SFP album? It would be crazy ish. S1 stepped up his beat game and M1 & Myth have been spitting vicious lately. This album is sprinkled with gems throughout. After the album is done I was satisfied but feel I might of over hyped it a bit but was definitely worth the purchase.

Unfortunately since I purchased off iTunes. I can't up the songs so you'll have to take action to hear this album. You won't be disappointed.

I know all of you have heard that two greats passed away this weekend. Isaac Hayes & Bernie Mac..I'm truly sad at the death of both as they had their own inspirational meaning in my life. If it wasn't laughs, it was a smile, if it was some soulful music, it was wise insight. Those two had alot more to offer the world while already offering and achieving so much. So may both your souls rest in peace, much love to both of you.

In this time of grief and uncertainly we must look in the hearts of ourselves and find what we truly love in life. We only get one. So take advantage of what you have now. Buff1 graciously drops his second album only a little over a year from his debut, "Pure". Does Buff1 suffer from the sophomore slump? Not in my opinion. This album is a big jump from Pure. Buff delivered excellent rhymes over brilliant production from The Lab Techs.

I've see Buff1 called a mix of Ras Kass and Elzhi. While I can see where you get that but does that make Buff1 a entirely new being to the hip hop world. I can see this album having the same effect that Blu & Exile's had last year. This album is majority produced by The Lab Tech. The worse beat on the album is Black Milk's beat. Now I'm not downing Black but Lab Tech are just that good. Buff picked some soulful banging beats that are sure to get a instant nod from anybody that loves music. As Buff1 doesn't waste a second on his album as every line has a great meaning and message. I've seriously listened to this album or majority of it everyday. My favorite songs have to be "Know The Secret", "Love The Love" & "Electrifying Music Maker" but the rest of the album is very listenable.

The singles for "There's Only One" are the heavy kicker "Beat The Speakers Up" & "Never Fall" featuring Black Milk. These two songs are great for Buff publicly as the heavy beat and hard lyricism is sure to catch some one's eye. While you have some what of contrast with Real Appeal & The Sky which love songs. Real Appeal goes on some real sexy ish describing the sexual need the woman has for Buff. The Sky is that clique "Ill sing you a song" type joint but backed over amazing samples. How could you skip it. There are actually no songs I would skip on this album. They are all fairly listenable.

But here is something many want to know. How does it hold up with Elzhi's The Preface? Well I love The Preface don't get me wrong but There's Only One takes the cake. I'll do a break down on that later but for now I recommend you check out the album. It releases tomorrow and you still have a chance to enter the contest to win a free copy of Buff1's CD.

The fairly unknown duo hailing from Houston called Aqualeo had quite a buzz that has now died down. But their creativity shouldn't go unappreciated. Much isn't known about the talented duo of Acie & Priceless. They do have a album out called Blue Flame which released in 2005. Unfortunately its on backorder so I haven't gotten my hands on it. But it seems they have went on a hiatus. But they are suppose to have another album coming called StarStuck (the cover is above). The singles for that LP is Cadillac & Passanger Seat. These two songs have gotten alot of attention and buzz. Namely Cadillac which was featured on many tapes back when it released. I dont know the status of "Starstuck" as of now but I will definitely find out something for ya. Ill keep you updated as I found out more info.

PROHHS: So introduce yourself to the people who been under a rock.

Buff1: My name is Jamall Jernard Bufford aka Buff1 and I'm a member of the mighty Athletic Mic League kings.

PROHHS: So you have a new album coming out on August 12th. Well I've had the chance to peep and review. That joint is crazy. The production is great & your growth was evident. So between the recording of Pure to the recording of There's Only One what do think contributed to this growth.

Buff1: Just studying the art form and really being dedicated to craft. On top of that, whatever life experiences I encountered in that year. From thinking about quitting my job to dealing with people opinion of your music and what you do.

PROHHS: Alot of artist go back to listen to their previous work and critique their work to make in their opinion the next project better. So is there anything you critiqued from Pure to make yourself better in your opinion?

Buff1: Nothing specifically, I just knew that I wanted my words to be a little more powerful and have a little more impact. And at the same time show that I can come with the witty clever lines as well. Just be an overall more well rounded emcee.

Pure is one of my favorite albums of 2007 & one of my personal favs. There's Only One hasn't had much time to grow on me but I definitely like it alot. So do you try to top each project with the next or do you make a project to translate where you are now in life.

Both. I want to do better every time. But I realize people are going to receive it however they want to receive it. As long I believe I improved I'm happy. But its also a time capsule for that period in my life, so it kinda serves as both.

So what was your inspiration for Pure?

Hip Hop music and being a better human being.

What motivated you to follow up with another album a little over a year after Pure?

The positive feedback I got from Pure, my ability to create in a short amount of time, and the fact the in this internet age people have a really short attention span. I have to drop consistently to remain relevant and keep the money coming in.

So what would you want a listener to grab from "There's Only One"?

My growth, something that will inspire you do better, and to cherish every moment, person, place or thing in your life.

Did you ever meet Dilla?

Yes, once. 2004 at the Detroit Electronic Music Festival. It was like if I were to meet Michael Jackson when I was 5, or meeting Michael Jordan when I was 15.

Does he inspire you in anyway?

No doubt! As an emcee and as a producer. Since I don't make beats it seems weird that he would influence me but his sound made you move different to the beat, made you feel different, made you wanna sing. Plus he influenced my crew the Lab Techs a great deal which in turn influenced me. And as an emcee him, Baatin and T3 really brought style back to the table. When most cats were tryin to rip your head off they just kinda let it flow and made their voices one of the instruments in the music.

How'd you get with Black Milk?

That's my homie. I told him I wanted a beat! Haha!

So what's up with AML? Who are the members of AML?

Everybody's grindin on their own stuff (parenting, school, work, music, graphic/web designs, party promoting, businesses) and at the same time helping me with my stuff. AML is Tres Styles aka Forekast, Grand Cee, Haircut, Wes T aka Vital, Vaughan T aka Texture, 14KT and Buff1.

Are any of them coming with any projects?

Yeah, pretty much everyone is coming out with projects at some point.

Will there be another AML collective album?

Yes, cats are gonna get the ball rollin soon, tryin to be done by January.

Solo wise where are the other members of AML?

A couple projects are done, just gotta strategize now.

Do you feel that a major label deal measures success? If not what does?

No, success depends on the person and what they want outta life.

Do you seek a major label deal? How is that going?

No, the New Model allows me to not worry about a major label deal.

Do you think the positives outweighs the negatives when it comes to music and the internet?

Hmmm, for the most part I would say yes I guess.

Last year I was on my Elzhi ish. I saw this album by this guy I've never heard before. What started out as I wanna check out that Elzhi joint turned to wow I just found a gem. Eventually after I purchase Buff1's Pure off UGHH.com. So much has been said about this album lately but I was on it before the hype. I love this album and surely one of my favs and one of the best of 07. Every song has a purpose with its own unique sound. It flows together pretty smoothly. The track or combination of tracks that really grab my eyes was Foodchaingang/House Of Horrors & That Fonk!/For You. The first combo went straight to the throat of whats wrong with america & our government then finish with a thunderous jab. Well on the second combo I'm not talking about the actually song "That Fonk!" but the prologue to For You thats mixed with the song. For You has a poetic vibe that sends shivers down my spine at times. This album is definitely must have so cop Pure & There's Only One so you can have two of the best crafted albums in the last five years.
